Goal 15 Life on Land

Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

At face value there’s not much a small marketing agency in Guildford can do to work towards Goal 15 but, as ever, we find a way.

The simple way we do it is by donating a small portion of our profits to Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT). SWT manages large areas of the countryside around our home and office, educates children and volunteer groups and creates a thriving habitat for local wildlife.

Whitmoor common. This bench is a 15 minute walk from our office It’s an amazing place to be at sunset even on a winter’s day.

Beyond financial donations, we ensure that all of our paper (kitchen, toilet, copier et al) is sustainably sourced.

As a vegan company we are acutely aware of our environmental footprint. By choosing not to eat meat and dairy products we’re not contributing to the massive output of methane gas and we think that our carbon footprint is about 2/3 that of someone on an average diet.

All of our cleaning products are cruelty-free, but we need to do more and we aim to stop purchasing products that contain palm oil. This is proving difficult though as palm oil appears in about 50% of the products in our supermarkets.

It’s great that Unilever and other organisations are pledging to eliminate palm oil. But until they do we will have to change brands, we currently favour Method, though we think some of their products are still using Palm Oil.

If you want to try and eliminate Palm Oil from your life (and stop the deforestation that’s required to drive this massive industry) you need to avoid these ingredients as kindly highlighted by WWF:

INGREDIENTS: Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Fat, Palm Kernel, Palm Kernel Oil, Palm Fruit Oil, Palmate, Palmitate, Palmolein, Glyceryl, Stearate, Stearic Acid, Elaeis Guineensis, Palmitic Acid, Palm Stearine, Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Kernelate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Lauryl Lactylate/Sulphate, Hyrated Palm Glycerides, Etyl Palmitate, Octyl Palmitate, Palmityl Alcohol

CONTAINS: Palm oil

What else?

It almost goes without saying, but we don’t buy bottled water and we try to buy products with as little packaging as possible. We know we’re not perfect but we trying.

What next?

We’d love to hear from any other micro-entities that are adopting the Sustainable Development Goals and have ideas to share on how we can improve. And if you’re not already following them, who knows, maybe this post wasn’t too preachy.
